SFB Students Top at 2023 Mathematical Contest in Modeling and 2023 Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM)

In mid-May 2023, the results of “2023 Mathematical Contest in Modeling” and “2023 Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM)” revealed: three of SHNU teams have won titles of “Meritorious Winner” and one “Honorable Mention”. All 4 teams have SFB students participated as team members.

The International Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) are multi-day mathematical modelling competitions held annually in USA, since 1985 by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) and sponsored by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). MCM/ICM are distinguished from other major mathematical competitions by their strong focus on research, modeling skills, mathematics, originality, teamwork, communication and justification of results. Thousands of international teams of three undergraduates compete to produce original mathematical papers in response to one of two modelling problems. MCM/ICM contests provide challenges to solve a real-world application problem, and get recognition for it on an international stage, which are excellent opportunity to develop students’ interpersonal skills through teamwork, develop technical writing and communication skills through students’ written report, feel a sense of accomplishment, and earn an impressive resume credential.
